Introducing
Sagan:
“What I love about dancing is that it is a wonderful opportunity to get more comfortable in our own skin, to strengthen the mind/body connection, to express emotion, to stay active (without it “feeling” like exercise), and to expand our comfort zones.”
When did you start dancing?
I first tried belly dancing about a decade ago. It was so much fun! I really enjoyed it but once the session wrapped up, I didn’t get around to dancing again until I joined Prairie Diva a couple years ago.
Favourite past times/other hobbies
Dancing is definitely my main hobby, but I also like going out for walks, doing yoga at home, reading books, and writing romance novels.
My day job
I’m a writer: I’ve been freelance writing for the past decade, and over the past few years I began teaching other freelancers how to build their own successful, profitable freelance businesses. Writing books (business books and romance novels) has recently become another major pillar of my business.
Fun/interesting fact about me
I identify as polyamorous (basically I have a whole lot of love in my heart to give people!).
Goals and aspirations
Currently I’ve published 4 romance novels and 4 business books, so I’m looking forward to building on that and making my books a larger part of my business. I would also love to work toward writing one of those books while living in Paris for a summer.
How I first heard about Prairie Diva dance classes
I believe it was a sponsored Instagram post which popped up in my feed right around the time that I was looking into dance classes in my neighbourhood. How fortuitious!
What I like about Prairie Diva dance classes
To me, burlesque fusion is all about self-love, and contemporary/jazz is all about trusting yourself. Learning to develop those kinds of skills from a mental/emotional standpoint while simultaneously working our physical muscles is fantastic. It’s cool to see how one style of dance can be beneficial for the other, too: each one gives the opportunity to be more at ease with our bodies and learn new ways to move them. Learning new dances to different songs on a regular basis is also great for continually improving.
Making friends & connections
I’ve made some beautiful friendships through these classes! It’s been fun to keep taking the same classes with several of the ladies, and also to hang out with each other outside of class (much of which involves going out dancing because we just can’t get enough of it, ha!). I didn’t know anyone when I first started taking the classes, and it didn’t occur to me at the time that I might make some new friends—but those friendships have been one of the best parts to come out of the classes.
What I’m most looking forward to with Prairie Diva’s classes
I’m really looking forward to doing more stage performances and to just seeing how much my dancing improves over time. Watching past videos is fascinating for being able to watch the progress that we make, so it’ll be great to see how much more I can improve in the future.
